Trophy Southern round-up

Nottingham Forest are in the second round after a 2-1 win at Gillingham.

League One leaders Nottingham Forest are through to the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy after a 2-1 win at Gillingham.

Jack Lester (7) gave Forest the lead at The Priestfield Stadium in their Southern Section first round tie with their League One rivals.

Grant Holt (55) extended Forest's lead before The Gills replied through Gary Mulligan (73), but it could not prevent the Kent-based club from going out of the cup competition for clubs in Leagues One and Two.

Brighton & Hove Albion took care of League Two opposition in Boston United after a 2-0 home victory.

Jake Robinson (41) gave The Seagulls the lead before Dean Hammond (65) sealed Brighton's place in the next stage.

Brentford needed penalties to win their all-League One tie at Northampton Town following a goalless draw.

Both clubs were unable to find a winner in 90 minutes of action, which meant penalties followed at The Sixfields Stadium.

Leroy Rosenior's side booked their place in the second round with a 4-2 win in the shoot-out.

A thrilling cup tie at The Bescot Stadium saw League One side Swansea City defeat League Two leaders Walsall on penalties.

Owain Tudur-Jones looked to have won the game for The Swans in the last minute, but Darren Wrack's equaliser in injury time before the final whistle meant a penalty shoot-out was needed to decide matters.

The visitors went through after claiming the shoot-out with a 4-3 scoreline.

A goal from Ian Stonebridge (13) sent Wycombe Wanderers through after a 1-0 win over League Two rivals Swindon Town at Adams Park.

A brace from Michael Symes (22, 77) helped Shrewsbury Town to a 2-1 win over local rivals Hereford United at Edgar Street.

Andrew Williams (79) scored a consolation for The Bulls.

A late goal from Byron Anthony (89) gave Bristol Rovers a 1-0 victory over West Country rivals Torquay United at The Memorial Stadium.

Finally, Barnet reached the second round draw after a 1-0 success over Notts County at Meadow Lane.

Tresor Kandol (16) scored the decisive winner for Paul Fairclough's side in the East Midlands.
