The Latics boss is looking to add cover for veteran wide man David Eyres and will observe the 31-year-old in a reserve team game on Wednesday.
Matias has previously played for Macclesfield, Tranmere and Walsall - clocking up almost 200 appearance during his time in England.
Oldham have also handed a trial to Marcus Sawyer, a left back who has been playing non-league football.
Meanwhile, Scott Vernon could be set for a permanent switch to Blackpool.
Last season's top goalscorer has fallen out of favour at Boundary Park under Brian Talbot and has spent the past month on loan at Bloomfield Road.
Pool boss Colin Hendry is keen to recruit the 20-year-old hit-man and Talbot concedes a deal could be struck.
''Colin Hendry has been in touch, so the next step is up to the chairman and the owners of the two clubs,'' Talbot told the Oldham Chronicle.
''We will take Blackpool's offer if it is good enough, but's there is no way I want Scott to leave if the deal isn't right for us.''
The player has admitted that he has enjoyed his time at Blackpool but that his future is ultimately out of his own hands.
''It was no fun being left out of the Oldham squad, so I've been enjoying my time here at Blackpool,'' conceded Vernon.
''I don't know what happens next. It has been nice to start playing league football and scoring goals again.''
