The Scottish Premiership side are in the market for a new boss after severing ties with Danny Lennon.
The 45-year-old, who had spent four years at the helm, was allowed to walk away on Monday as his expiring contract was not renewed.
That decision was taken on the back of an eighth place finish, but one only achieved after a late upturn in fortunes.
St Mirren are now considering their next appointment, and feel a man who cut his coaching teeth in 2013/14 could be the way to go.
Former Scotland international Ferguson spent the second half of the season in caretaker charge at Blackpool, in the wake of Paul Ince's dismissal.
He guided the club to Championship safety, but a more experienced head is to be sought at Bloomfield Road.
That could pave the way for Ferguson to return to his homeland and take a permanent post at St Mirren Park.
