Butcher has recently returned to Boundary Park following a loan-spell at former club Lincoln, after what was a difficult start to life in the North West.
The former Sincil Bank favourite joined Oldham in the summer but was subjected to intense criticism from a section of the club's supporters and was soon shipped back to Lincoln.
On his return he stated a desire to stay at Lincoln on a permanent basis but with that deal having failed to materialise, he has now rejected a switch to Yeovil.
''Yeovil came in and I was prepared to let Richard go there for a month, but he didn't fancy it,'' Latics boss Ronnie Moore told the club's official website.
''I've spoken to the lad and he is hoping to get back in our side and show people he can play.
''If his mind is right and I think he's ready, he would come into the reckoning for our first team.
''That might not happen straight away - it would depend how I thought Richard would handle the occasion - but he says he wants to fight for a place.
''It may be that he's only here until the transfer window reopens, but there's plenty of time until January.''
Meanwhile, club captain Chris Swailes, who has yet to play for Oldham since arriving from Rotherham, has now undergone surgery in an attempt to rid himself of a long-standing heel injury.
Whilst Swailes is expected to be out for three to four weeks, fellow defender Stefan Stam is also to go under the knife for surgery on his injured knee.
