Latics boss Brian Talbot (pictured) has already begun to prune his squad - with a busy close-season of transfer activity expected at the Second Division club.
Talbot has made no secret of his desire to add fresh faces to his squad and the news of the release of Calvin Zola, Carlos Roca and Craig Fleming comes as little surprise.
Zola was originally brought to the club by Iain Dowie in a loan deal from Newcastle United - but since his switch to Crystal Palace - the player has found himself increasingly out of favour.
The striker netted seven goals in 28 appearances for the club but will not be retained, having already been informed he will not have his contract renewed at St James' Park.
The release of diminutive wide man Roca is of greater surprise, as he did show promise in his sporadic appearances for the club this season.
Striker Fleming was restricted to just one substitute appearance this season and will now attempt to seek another club.
Meanwhile, versatile youngster Danny Forde has signed a one-year contract extension to his current professional deal.
On-loan goalkeeper Kieron Westwood is to return to parent club Manchester City after failing to force his way into Brian Talbot's first-team.
Westwood was recently replaced as Athletic's number two by deadline-day recruit Steve Corry.
