Swansea City have confirmed the signing of full-back Kyle Naughton from Tottenham.

The 26-year-old has signed a three-and-a-half year contract for an undisclosed fee believed to be in the region of £5million.

Sky Sports reported on Wednesday that the former Sheffield United defender had agreed personal terms and passed a medical, with the two Premier League clubs having agreed a deal on Tuesday.

Swansea manager Garry Monk revealed the player trained with his squad on Thursday morning and spoke of his delight at Naughton's capture.

Quality

Monk said: "Kyle's experienced at this level and brings Premier League pedigree.

"He's a good age for us, and we look for players who want to prove a point and are hungry to do well. These players don't always become available but the signing is testament to the club and how far we've come and what we're trying to do.

"Kyle enjoyed his time at Tottenham but he didn't have the amount of games he wanted. But he will add quality with the other full-backs we've got and I'm looking for Kyle to push on and stake a claim for the starting XI."

Naughton struggled to establish himself in Spurs' first-team since after arriving in 2009 and has been the subject of interest from a number of Premier League clubs in the current window.

Both Leicester, whom he previously spent time at on loan, and Crystal Palace believed they were in a strong position to sign the full-back but the player decided to move to south Wales.

Regular football

“I’m pleased it’s all done because there has been talk since the summer over a potential move," Naughton said.

"I’m sad to be leaving Spurs because it’s a great club. I was there quite a while and the lads are a great bunch.

"My main aim is to start playing regular football again. I know it’s going to be a tough challenge because there are some very good players here, but that’s my goal.

"I just want to settle into life at Swansea and try to play regularly. It all comes down to playing football - after all, that’s my job."
