Cumbrians sign Holmes

Carlisle United have signed Bournemouth striker Derek Holmes.

Bournemouth striker Derek Holmes has joined Conference club Carlisle United for an undisclosed fee.

The 26-year-old Scot was keen on a move to Paul Simpson's side and has penned a deal until the summer of 2006 with The Cumbrians.

The former Hearts and Ross County hit-man leaves Dean Court after a little more than three years with the South Coast club.

"He and his wife are expecting their first child, so a move closer to home and first team football obviously appealed," Cherries boss Sean O'Driscoll told his club's official website.

Carlise boss Paul Simpson has spoken of delight at landing a long-term target.

''He's a different type of player to what we have and I'm delighted to have him here,'' Simpson told the News and Star.

''He's big and strong and can hold the ball up well, and I'm glad it is done and dusted as it is someone I've known for a year or so.''
