The O's had won their opening three games but they were brought back down to earth in emphatic style by Dale.
The ubiquitous Grant Holt fired Rochdale ahead after 24 minutes, before a brace from Rickie Lambert (29 & 68) put the game beyond Orient.
Alan Goodall added a fourth (74), before Efe Echanomi grabbed a last minute consolation.
The new leaders are Conference champions Barnet who maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 1-0 win over Macclesfield at Underhill.
Nick Bailey scored the only goal of the game after 26 minutes.
Wycombe are showing good early season form and they handed a 4-0 drubbing to Bury.

Lincoln came from behind to beat Oxford 2-1 at Sincil Bank.
Craig Davies (2) had given Oxford the lead just two minutes in, but second half strikes from Gary Birch (62) and Derek Asamoah (72) won the game for The Imps.
The game was marred by two late red cards as Paul Mayo and Chris Hargreaves got their marching orders.
Peterborough claimed their second successive win with a 2-0 victory over Mansfield.
Two goals in ten second half minutes from David Farrell (50) and Sean St Ledger (60) gave The Posh the win. Chester remain undefeated this season after a 1-1 draw at Rushden.
Ryan Lowe (56), who was sent off in the final minute, gave Chester the lead but Chris O'Grady (61) secured a point for The Diamonds.
The final game of the day saw Notts County claim a 1-1 draw at Stockport County.
Ashley Williams put through his own net (14) to give County the lead, but Jermaine Easter restored parity just after the half hour mark.
