Second from bottom Torquay found themselves 2-0 up at half time thanks to goals from Morike Sako (13) and Tony Bedeau.
However, Leroy Rosenior's men could not hang on as Kevin Betsy (71) pulled one back before Alex Lawless (80) put through his own net.
Grimsby remain in second after they sealed a hard-fought 2-1 win at Bury.
Danny Reet (13) put The Shakers in front, but Gary Jones (29) and Gary Cohen (75) made sure the points went back to North East Lincolnshire.
Leyton Orient kept up the pressure at the top end of the table as they moved into third with a 5-1 drubbing of Rushden & Diamonds at Brisbane Road.
Drewe Broughton actually put Rushden ahead after 24 minutes, but the home side were soon ahead as goals from John Mackie (26, pictured) and Lee Steele (28 & 35) made it 3-1 at the interval.
Rushden's cause was not helped by John Dempster's sending off with 20 minutes to go, and Orient added two more thanks to Jabo Ibehre and Craig Easton.
Northampton climbed into fourth after they overcame Mansfield 1-0 at The Sixfields, with David Hunt's goal after 66 minutes enough for Colin Calderwood's men.
Darlington claimed a 1-1 draw at Carlisle United - who dropped out of the top three.
Former Sunderland man Chris Lumsdon had fired home a penalty on 29 minutes, but Simon Johnson levelled (37) to seal a share of the spoils for the visitors.

Oxford eased their worries of bring dragged into the relegation battle with a 3-0 win over Notts County at The Kassam Stadium.
All the goals came in the final 27 minutes as Steve Basham (63), Eric Sabin (68) and Barry Quinn (77) scored.
Barnet came from behind to claim a 2-1 over Peterborough United at Underhill.
