Achterberg stays with Rovers

Tranmere goalkeeper John Achterberg has signed a new two-year deal at the club.

Tranmere goalkeeper John Achterberg has signed a new two-year deal at the club.

The 33-year-old has revealed he rejected a return to his native Holland to stay at Prenton Park.

"I am very pleased and the family are as well because we like it up here and wanted to stay," Achterberg told the club's official website.

"I had interest from the Dutch Premiership and they gave me an offer as well. I went to Tranmere to see if they wanted to keep me, because although the offer in Holland was a bit better, we preferred to stay here.

"Hopefully we can stay a bit longer after this contract too and I'll be playing in The Championship and stay there for two years.

"I want to play well and stay fit and then carry on playing after that as well."
