Tranmere boss Ronnie Moore has challenged John Achterberg to prove himself.
Tranmere boss Ronnie Moore has challenged John Achterberg to prove himself in pre-season in order to win a contract extension.
A knee injury brought the Dutch goalkeeper's current campaign to an early finish and he is out of contract at the end of the season.
Achterberg, who has made 298 appearances for the club since his move from FC Utrecht in 1998, has been second choice at Prenton Park to Gavin Ward.
The 35-year-old has made only three league starts for Rovers this term but has been coaching at the club.
"He won't play again this season and it's just a matter of then having a chat to him to see what he has in mind," Moore said.
"It's going to be difficult and he may have to prove himself in pre-season, here or wherever, but he's a the stage now where he'll have to do that."
