The hosts had to endure a fraught game to seal the three points as the decisive goal arrived on eight minutes courtesy of Paul Green.
Leo Fortune-West was the provider of the first real chance of the game and Green tucked the ball beyond visiting keeper Lee Harper.
The Cobblers were equal to their opponents for much of the contest but could not find a way past home shot-stopper Andy Warrington.
He turned Derek Asamoah's shot around the post and from the resulting corner Ian Sampson turned Martin Smith's set-piece wide of the target.
Opportunities were scarce for either side with Michael McIndoe and Adriano Rigoglioso forcing Harper in to comfortable saves.
Late on, a McIndoe cross provided the chance for a second, clinching goal but Gregg Blundell headed in to the arms of Harper.
