Boss sees Spireites at Wembley

John Sheridan has Wembley in sight after Chesterfield beat Preston to make the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Northern Area final.

A Jamie McCombe header and a predatory finish from Craig Westcarr meant the sides could not be separated in normal time and when the normally dependable Graham Alexander missed for the Lilywhites in the shootout, it was left to Alexandre Mendy to keep his cool and put the Spireites through. And Sheridan, whose side currently sit bottom of npower League One, admitted there was still a lot of hard work to come aside from their morale-boosting cup run. "I'm just pleased for the players and the supporters because they've stayed with us all the way through, we've had a good following even with the conditions tonight (Tuesday), and there's a chance of Wembley," he said. "We know we can create goals and we need to work hard because we know we need to stop leaking goals. "If we do that then I think we'll be okay in the league. It's going to be a very long, hard season and you know we've got to get out of the position we're in currently. "But our work ethic was really good, we kept going all through the game. Attacking-wise we created lots of opportunities and we defended really well, they've had opportunities but we've defended well."
