The 33-year-old former Oldham, Blackpool and Leicester man had a first stint with Doncaster between 2007 and 2009 before returning in August on a short-term deal.
The Doncaster website said: "Richie has earned rave reviews for his performances since returning.
"He has been an integral part of the Rovers midfield, showing calmness on the ball and using his experience to bring others in to play."
And Doncaster boss Paul Dickov added: "I'm delighted that Richie has agreed to stay here until January. It puts to bed all the speculation regarding Richie and I've always said that he would stay.
"To be fair to him, he's not let the speculation bother him. He's just got on with it and has shown everybody what a top professional he is.
"Richie's experience, how he plays the game and how he handles himself, is top class, and the players and fans look up to him.
"I've got to thank the board for making it possible for us to keep Richie at the club."
