The 40-year-old goal-getter will be back on the market once a six-month contract at Crystal Palace comes to an end later this week.
Various clubs have already been offered up as potential destinations for Phillips, with there no plans on his part to hang up his boots just yet.
A reunion with Ian Holloway has been mooted, a man he has worked under on two previous occasions at Blackpool and Palace.
Holloway has recently inherited the reins at Championship strugglers Millwall, but Phillips claims there is no chance of him agreeing another deal in the capital - with it his intention to find a new employer closer to his Midlands base.
He told the South London Press: "It would be too far for me.
"It would be wrong of me to come out saying I didn't want to travel to Palace when Millwall is only a couple of miles away.
"I want to try and keep within the Midlands area. You can never say never if something jumps out at you that you can't turn down for three or four months - as it did with Palace.
"But as we sit here now I don't want to go somewhere that involves staying in hotels or driving three or four hours a day.
"I've spoken to three or four clubs and had some promising meetings. But it will be a bit like sorting my contract at Palace in the summer, it won't be straightforward and will take a bit of time.
"I'd like the club to be about a maximum of an hour away."
