Former Burnley star Tony Grant has blasted the transfer window rules that have scuppered his move to Crewe, although the midfielder is hopeful the Professional Footballers' Association can help resolve the issue.Grant was denied the chance to sign for Dario Gradi's Championship side as he had been contracted on a week-to-week basis by Bristol City when the transfer window closed at the end of August.
After leaving The Robins Grant has been unable to take up a further contract with Crewe, a situation which has infuriated the 30-year-old.
However, after enlisting the help of the PFA, Grant is holding out hope that the rules can be bent to allow him to earn a living before January.
"I've had a word with the PFA and they seem very hopeful something can be done," Grant told Crewe's official website.
"When I went down to Bristol City, if I'd known signing for just a week could then stop me playing until January, I wouldn't have done it.
"If someone had told me that then there is no way I would have jeopardised my career.
"What the league are saying is that I was contracted to Bristol then and I can't sign two contracts.
"I just hope there is some common sense applied to the issue. I think it is a ridiculous ruling which needs to be highlighted."
Crewe boss Gradi has already stated he is keen to have Grant as a permanent member of his squad, and will wait until January if necessary to sign the experienced midfielder.
