Dario Gradi fears he will have to sell Crewe Alexandra starlet Billy Jones in the New Year, after the teenager rejected a new contract.
Jones' current deal expires at the end of the season and he has turned down the chance to stay at Gresty Road.
Though he is only 19-years-old, Jones has already made 110 appearances for the League One side and has been tracked by Premiership clubs.
Long-serving Crewe boss Gradi is resigned to losing the versatile youngster and may look to cash in when the transfer window reopens, rather than wait until next summer.
"Billy has not accepted our offer of a new contract and we will discuss the next step at the next board meeting," Gradi told the club's official website.
"We cannot persuade him to sign, so it could be that we will look to sell him when the transfer window reopens.
"We have done as much as we can do and the ball is very much in his court now.
"He and his advisors are adamant that it is in his best interests to move on and, of course, it is always disappointing when one of the younger players decides that course of action.
"Even if he signed a new contract we would have to let him move on in the future, if the right offer and right club come along.
"I don't know what he is thinking, but we will do what is in our best interests now."
