Pouton's deal at Blundell Park expires in the summer and with his appearances for The Mariners having been limited recently because of a knee injury, he has decided to take a loan move to The Gills.
The move for Pouton comes after Gillingham announced that fellow midfielder Nicky Southall could be out for the remainder of the season with an ankle injury.
The former Hartlepool United, Grimsby Town and Bolton Wanderers player has been playing through the pain barrier in recent matches.
Southall had a scan on his injured ankle this week and the results have shown that he may need a scope on his ankle that will keep him out of action for up to three months.
Gillingham have also revealed that youngster Michael Phillips has been forced to retire through injury.
The former club trainee made just one substitute appearance in the first team but injuries to both his legs have forced Phillips to hang up his boots.
Meanwhile, Gills first team coach Wayne Jones has denied that the club have handed a trial to Dunfermline Athletic winger Sean Kilgannon.
"He has not been with us at all," Jones told the club's official website.
