Gills pair extend deals

Gillingham have extended the contracts of Ian Cox and Mark Saunders.

Gillingham have extended the contracts of centre back Ian Cox and midfielder Mark Saunders.

The pair had seen their previous deals expire at The Priestfield Stadium, but Gills boss Neale Cooper has decided to include the duo in his plans for the new season.

Saunders has been handed an initial six-month deal after the former Plymouth Argyle player recovered from a broken leg that he suffered last August.

Cox (pictured) has signed a one-year contract with the Kent-based club after featuring prominently under former Gills manager Stan Ternent last season.

The former Bournemouth and Burnley player will likely be an essential part of Cooper's backline in the forthcoming League One campaign.

The Gills, meanwhile, have also tabled a new contract offer to club captain Paul Smith, with the player to make a decision in the near future.
