Neil Aspin closing in on Port Vale job as club discuss compensation with Gateshead

Former Port Vale defender Neil Aspin is close to being confirmed as the club's new manager, Sky Sports News understands.

Aspin is manager of Gateshead, who have confirmed that assistant manager Lee Nogan will take charge of their game at AFC Fylde on Tuesday night.

Sky Sports News understands Port Vale have agreed a compensation package with Gateshead for Aspin, who is set to replace the sacked Michael Brown.

Aspin remains a fans' favourite at Vale Park, having been a linchpin of their team for more than a decade after arriving in 1989 from Leeds United.

Gateshead said in a statement: "In light of the ongoing speculation surrounding Gateshead manager Neil Aspin, we can confirm that discussions regarding his future at the club are ongoing.

"As a result, assistant manager Lee Nogan will take charge of the side at AFC Fylde this evening. A further statement will be made in due course."
