Crewe Alexandra and Port Vale have both denied a deal for striker Billy Paynter.Crewe Alexandra and Port Vale have both denied that a deal has been struck for Valiants striker Billy Paynter.
Both clubs moved to deny a report on an unofficial Crewe website that said the 20-year-old was set to move to Gresty Road after both clubs seemingly agreed a fee.
However, both Crewe and Vale moved quickly to quash speculation by releasing statements on Tuesday.
"We have had no contact with Crewe about Billy's situation," Vale boss Martin Foyle told the club's official website.
"Billy is a Port Vale player and will remain so for the next two seasons.
"I am looking to build a squad capable of challenging in the top ten next season, so we need all of our best players."
Alex manager Dario Gradi echoed Foyle's sentiments by criticising those who published the Paynter story.
"I have no idea where this report has come from, and I am very disappointed with this piece of irresponsible journalism," Gradi told Crewe's official website.
Meanwhile, Vale have extended the loan of Peterborough United midfielder Danny Sonner until the end of the season.
The 33-year-old initially joined the Potteries club on a month's loan back in February.
