Manchester United defender Regan Poole has joined Northampton on loan for the 2017/18 season, Sky sources understand.

Poole was transferred to United from Newport County, where he broke into the first team under current Northampton manager Justin Edinburgh, in September 2015.

The 19-year-old has made just one senior appearance since moving to Old Trafford, as a late substitute in the 5-1 Europa League win over FC Midtjylland on February 25, 2016.

"Regan is a player I know well from my time at Newport County and he is an exceptionally talented player," said Edinburgh.

"I gave him his debut as a 16-year-old and he is a player with a fantastic temperament and someone who is well ahead of his years."

Edinburgh has undertaken a major reshaping of the Northampton squad and last week signed another central defender, Ashton Taylor, from Aberdeen.

Northampton last month sold a major stake of the club to Chinese sports company 5USport.
