The former Birmingham City and Northampton Town player will be available for John Ward's squad when they host Mansfield Town on Saturday.
The 33-year-old had been on trial with The Robins before agreeing terms with the Gloucestershire-based club and Ward was pleased to snap up the veteran player.
"Jerry is an experienced professional who can do two or three different jobs for the team, which is important for a smaller club like this," Ward told Cheltenham's official website.
"With Mark Yates having left and Lee Howells out on loan, he will provide us with a bit of experience and cover for different areas of the team.
"We have signed him on an initial non-contract basis until the end of the season and we'll see what develops from that."
Gill's arrival has been coupled with the news that young defender Luke Buttery has joined Dr Martens League Western Division club Swindon Supermarine on a month's loan.
The move is Buttery's second loan spell away from Whaddon Road the season, having already spent time at non-league side Chippenham Town before Christmas.
Meanwhile, Northampton have released defefender Tom Smith from his contract at The Sixfield Stadium, as Cobblers boss Colin Calderwood continues to shape his squad.
Smith failed to make a first team appearance for the Division Three this season following last summer's move from Rotherham United, having taken a loan move to non-league side Gainsborough Trinity earlier in the campaign.
He looks set to Conference promotion-chasers Hereford United next week.
