Northampton Town have confirmed striker Billy McKay will be handed a contract extension for next season.
McKay joined the Cobblers on a one-year deal from Leicester City last summer and scored his eighth goal in 41 appearances in last Saturday's win over Shrewsbury Town.
He has now triggered a clause which entitles him to a new deal and Northampton boss Ian Sampson confirmed he wants the 21-year-old in his plans for the next campaign.
"Under the terms of Billy's contract we have a clause in our favour to extend the contract for next season and I will invoke that," Sampson told the club's official website.
"Billy is a young striker who is improving all the time. He has got a good goal return since establishing himself a little bit in the second half of the season and he will have really benefitted from the experience of this season.
"We saw on Saturday - as we have other times through the season - how well he took his goal and he is a natural finisher.
"He can be pleased with his first season as a first-team player so far and the challenge will be for him to keep kicking on."
