David Wagner insists he has not set any targets for Huddersfield to chase this season, although he does accept that retaining their Premier League status would be considered a success.
The Terriers play their first top-tier home match for more than 45 years on Sunday, when they entertain Newcastle.
And when asked if he would be happy to finish 17th in the table this season, the Huddersfield manager said: "No, because maybe we are able to get 14th or 12th.
"I would not take it because I think we should not give ourselves any limits.
"But if you ask me if staying up is a success, then yes, absolutely it is a success."
Wagner admits he will speak to his friend, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, to seek advice but says it is impossible to compare the two clubs.
He added: "These two clubs are totally different. I think the experiences he's had at Liverpool will be totally different from the ones I will have at Huddersfield.
If you ask me if staying up is a success, then yes, absolutely it is a success.
"For sure we'll speak about different opponents to give advice, things like what he's done against team A and what I've done against team B.
"But you cannot compare Liverpool with us. We're two completely different sizes of football club and this is why regarding the Premier League, he hasn't given me advice - regarding opponents, he will for sure."
Ahead of Sunday's match, the Yorkshire club have no new injury concerns although four players are still unavailable.
Jonathan Hogg and Nahki Wells have ankle problems, while Martin Cranie and Jon Gorenc Stankovic are absent with hip and knee injuries respectively.
Midfielder Hogg is closest to making a return to first-team action, although possibly not until after the forthcoming international break.
