"They have every right, that was absolutely OK," he added.

"Our supporters had every right to show that they were not happy because the expectation was the Premier League side should beat the Championship team at home and reach the next round."

On the prospect of facing Manchester United next, Wagner said: "This is a nice present of course it is, this is what we work for.

"We have to be top on Tuesday because Birmingham is a good side if we want to reach the next round.

"We can go into this game without thinking about our Premier League defeat against Manchester United at the weekend."

Wagner feels Huddersfield are entering a vital period of the season after suffering their fifth straight Premier League defeat, at Old Trafford.

"Every win can help to give you a better feeling, a better mood, a better atmosphere," Wagner said. "We have numbers to have a good squad which has all the abilities to be successful."
