David Mirfin was the hero for The Terriers pouncing 18 minutes from time to secure what could be a crucial winning goal.
Peter Jackson's side made the perfect start when Iffy Onoura opened the scoring with a glancing header from a right-wing corner with just five minutes on the clock.
The Red Imps fought back well and were eventually rewarded six minutes after the interval when Gary Fletcher restored parity from close range after Marcus Richardson and Simon Yeo had seen efforts saved.
However, it was Huddersfield who had the final say when Mirfin reacted quickest to stab home from an acute angle after Andy Booth had seen his header saved.
The Yorkshire outfit will be confident of finishing the job at the McAlpine Stadium next week.
