Former Brighton and Wrexham shot-stopper Cartwright has inked a one-year deal with The Shrews and manager Kevin Ratcliffe is now rubbing his hands at the prospect of such intense rivalry between his two custodians.
"Ian knew it would not just be him, and Mark's arrival will get a good competitive edge going between them," he commented.
"If I can get the best out of Ian and Mark this year then I can't have any complaints. There are not many managers who are in my position and can say they have confidence in both of their keepers.
"I am quite happy with what I have got and it is one less headache for me, but they are going to have to fight for the one place and it will be a question of who wants to start on the opening day of the season.
"Both are as good as each other but both have got different qualities."
