The Seagulls looked to have given themselves a fighting chance of avoiding the drop thanks to a strike from midfielder Paul Brooker after just two minutes.
David Connolly then equalised for the Crazy Gang just before half-time as news filtered through Withdean that Brighton Pier was being evacuated because of a fire.
Gary Hart then saw red for the home side a minute before half-time and Wimbledon's on-loan Arsenal defender Moritz Voltz then scored a 25-yard cracker on 48 minutes against Dave Beasant who was making his debut for Brighton against the club where he made his name.
Beasant, turning out for his 12th club, then repeated his 1988 FA Cup final heroics by saving Neil Shipperley's spot-kick before Connolly wrapped things up with his 16th goal of the season on 79.
Bobby Zamora pulled one back for Brighton with five minutes remaining but the win keeps the South London side in 17th position and surely safe from the drop, whilst Steve Coppell troops face the real threat of relegation.
