The Seagulls have already signed Aston Villa's Wayne Henderson on loan to provide competition for Michel Kuipers, but McGhee has now offered Chaigneau the chance to prove his worth at The Withdean Stadium.
The 21-year-old learnt his trade as understudy to Petr Cech with Rennes and is now looking to follow his former team-mate to England.
Chaigneau has until Tuesday to impress McGhee and secure a permanent deal, with The Seagulls also tracking Southampton shot-stopper Alan Blayney.
The Rennes man, who has previously been monitored by Manchester United, is the second French player to try his luck in Brighton after Sebastien Carole joined on trial from Monaco on Wednesday.
