Terry Connor has vowed to come down on his players like a ton of bricks if they fail to produce the goods for Wolves.
The new Molineux boss has been given the task of saving the club from the drop after being handed the reins by the club's owner Steve Morgan.
And Connor, who has spent 13 years at the Black Country outfit under four different managers, showed who is boss by dropping £4.5million summer signing Roger Johnson to the bench and stripping him of the captaincy at Newcastle on Saturday.
Connor, who handed the armband to Stephen Ward for the 2-2 draw at St James' Park, said: "I've told the lads that I will treat every game on its own merits.
"And I will pick what I think is the best team for that game regardless of captaincy, what anyone cost or a player's reputation.
"When you lose a game 5-1 at home like we did against West Brom you're not going to send out the same team and the same subs. I went with my gut feeling."
Decision
The move was Connor's response to the 5-1 derby defeat by West Brom at Molineux which cost Mick McCarthy his job.
But the new man at the helm has praised the 28-year-old centre-back for his response, despite showing some erratic form since his summer move from West Midlands rivals Birmingham City.
"I didn't want to do it but I thought it was the right decision," Connor said.
"I'm not blaming Roger for us losing to West Brom but most people would agree you couldn't keep the same team and subs when you've lost 5-1.
"But Roger took it very well, took it on the chin. He supported the lads and did everything I'd expect of him as captain of the team. That's what you have to do.
"He will want to be in the next team (at Fulham) so he has to be a good pro. Being captain doesn't mean that you have to play in every game."
