Paul Lambert is confident Aston Villa are making progress and believes the positive response of supporters will give him breathing space during what is a transitional period after a host of summer signings.

Bennett delight

One of the youngsters to make the step up has been former Middlesbrough defender Joe Bennett, who impressed on his Premier League debut for Villa against the Baggies. He said: "We've got a lot of hungry players who want to do well, who will chase the ball non-stop for 90 minutes, and show a lot of energy. "I think we will do well this season. It's a massive club, massive fans to play in front of. "It was a fantastic occasion for me, stepping up from Championship football to Premier League football. "It's all new and a big step up but I'm ready for that step up. "Going forward is my main attribute, to help the forwards and the midfielders, but my priority is to defend first."
