Ricky Lambert put Dale ahead at Spotland after just 14 minutes, but Alan Connell levelled for The Gulls just two minutes later.
Scott Warner put the hosts back in the lead on 22 minutes, and things got even worse for the visitors when Craig Taylor handled Grant Holt's shot on the goal-line.
Holt stepped up to take the resultant penalty and converted from 12 yards to make it 3-1 before Lambert bagged his second to seal a comfortable victory and inflict more misery on bottom side Torquay.
A double from Junior Agogo helped Bristol Rovers earn a 3-2 win at Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road.
Craig Disley put The Pirates ahead after 15 minutes, and Agogo bagged his first from the penalty spot on 54 minutes.
Gary Alexander pulled one back for the hosts 15 minute from the end, but Agogo made it 31 with eight minutes left, meaning Daryl McMahon's last minute strike came too late for Orient.
