Winger Dean Cox broke the deadlock in a tight affair on the hour mark, with substitute Chris Dagnall doubling the Os' lead.
Conor Washington's goal led to a nervy finish, but Slade's men held on to reach Wembley with a 3-2 aggregate success, much to their manager's delight.
"They were an inspiration tonight," Slade told Sky Sports.
"Peterborough played their role magnificently and nearly got back in it at the death.
"We deserved it on the balance of play.
"We are a sleepy East End football team, and it's like a new club has been born tonight.
"The fans were fantastic, as were the players. It has been a fantastic journey.
"But we must not get carried away, there is still one game to go."
Slade reserved special praise for Cox, who has stuck with the club and played a major part in the team putting themselves on the verge of promotion.
"That's his 16th, I think, little, tiny Cox," Slade added.
"I have had him about five years now, the boys think he is my son I've had him that long."
