The 30-year-old has been told he will need a second operation to clear up the problem, with Young facing up to eight weeks on the sidelines following surgery.
Cherries boss Sean O'Driscoll admitted it was in the interest of the defender to go under the knife to sort out the ankle problem.
"He broke down in training and this has happened to him two or three times now," said O'Driscoll.
"At a push, he could wait until the end of the season, but the specialist recommended another operation.
"He's out of contract at the end of the season and needs to be playing. For Neil's long-term future, it's better he has the operation as soon as possible."
Young's contract means he would be offered an extension if he reached 20 appearances for the South Coast club but he has only played in seven matches so far this term.
