X-rays earlier in the week revealed that the former Bolton Wanderers and West Bromwich Albion hit-man had more than bruising in the rib cage area.
The 36-year-old suffered the injury when he came on as a substitute in Saturday's 2-0 home defeat to Division Three leaders Hull City.
"It seems highly likely that Bob has cracked a rib and will probably be out of action for three to four weeks," Robins physio Ian Weston told the club's official website.
"It could have been worse but it is one that we are going to have to be patient with."
Meanwhile, Cheltenham Town manager John Ward has appointed former club boss Jim Barron to work with the club's senior goalkeepers.
