Book will link up with The Robins on their pre-season trip to Devon after being released by Cheltenham Town at the end of the last campaign.
The 34-year-old will have the opportunity to clinch a deal with the Second Division side and press Rhys Evans for the number one jersey.
After losing the services of Bart Griemink, Robins boss King believes drafting in Book is the right route to take.
"I decided to go for an experienced keeper and Steve Book will be joining us on the trip to Bideford with a view to signing a contract here," said King.
"I could have gone down the route of bringing in another young kid but I felt this is the way to go. I only lost Bart Griemink because of finances."
Current Swindon first choice Evans is looking forward to the challenge posed by Book during pre-season.
Evans told the Evening Advertiser: "If I'm honest I don't know too much about Steve but he's obviously experienced.
"Competition is all part of football. I'm the man in possession of the shirt and it's up to me to keep showing the sort of form to keep it that way."
