Luke O'Brien has signed a new one-year contract at Bradford City as manager Stuart McCall waits for Joe Colbeck to agree an extension.
Young full-back O'Brien was due to be out of contract at the end of the month, but he has agreed a new one-year deal at Valley Parade.
He was offered two-year terms and Bantams boss McCall admits he is surprised O'Brien has opted to sign a shorter contract.
"If I was his age, I'd look for the security and go for two years," McCall told the Telegraph & Argus. "That's not me talking as the manager, but just my opinion.
"You never know what can happen because a year's a long time in football, but hopefully he'll do as well next season as in the last one and we'll be sitting down again this time next year looking at something longer."
Meanwhile, McCall is confident winger Colbeck will soon sign an extension saying: "It's only a few minor things and not a case that he's hanging on.
"It's just the length of the contract, because Joe comes up to 24 in a couple of years' time and the club have got to safeguard that he doesn't walk away for nothing.
"He loves this club and likes playing here, so I don't foresee a problem."
