The 33-year-old was omitted from Monday's team to face Bournemouth but vented his displeasure at McFarland's decision.
Uhlenbeek had been a regular performer for The Spireites since joining the club on a free transfer last summer.
But the club have agreed to terminate his contract by mutual consent following his outburst at being dropped.
With Chesterfield fighting for Second Division survival, McFarland admitted it was the best option to release Uhlenbeek.
"Gus explained that he was de-motivated by the experience of being dropped which would make it very difficult for him to remain fully focused for the remainder of the season," McFarland told the club's official website.
"I am very disappointed that he has adopted this attitude and agreed immediately that he should leave the club as the last thing we need are any negative vibes about the place."
