Chesterfield defender Aaron Downes has signed a new contract with the club.Chesterfield defender Aaron Downes has signed a new contract with the League One club.
The Australian international has extended his Saltergate contract until the summer of 2008, replacing the previous deal he signed last March.
The 20-year-old has become a regular in the centre of Roy McFarland's backline, with the Chesterfield manager delighted to extend Downes's stay in North Derbyshire.
"Aaron Downes is a youngster with lots of potential and he is learning all the time," McFarland told the club's official website.
"We are delighted he wants to commit his future to Chesterfield and I predict he will only get better."
The news is not as positive for fellow Spireites defender Reuben Hazell, as he could miss the rest of the season with broken bone in his foot.
The former Torquay United and Kidderminster Harriers player sustained the injury during last month's 1-0 defeat at Hartlepool United.
Scans confirmed the bone fracture in his foot and the 26-year-old will be missing for several months, but McFarland remains hopeful he can return before the season's end.
"We hope that Reuben will still have a part to play in our season, especially if we can bounce back to make the play-offs," added McFarland.
