Chesterfield are keen to sign former Rangers midfielder Peter Leven.
The Spireites manager Lee Richardson is looking to strengthen his squad and he admits he is interested Leven.
The 23-year-old, who was released by Kilmarnock at the end of last season, has been on trial at Saltergate and he impressed Richardson in Chesterfield's 5-1 friendly win over Matlock on Tuesday.
"As a manager you like to have as many good players as you can and if we can do something with Leven then I would like to do that," said Richardson.
"I thought he fitted in very well against Matlock and I think he is a very good player. We will have to see if we can see more of him."
Meanwhile, defender Gareth Davies has been sidelined for the start of the season after breaking a toe against Matlock.
Davies limped out of the match with only 12 minutes on the clock and a scan has revealed he has three breaks in his big toe.
The 24-year-old now faces at least six weeks out of action after making just 18 appearances in Chesterfield's last campaign following a number of injury setbacks
"This is cruel luck for Gareth as he has just returned fully recovered for pre-season training after an injury hit season last year," Richardson concluded.
