Torquay United are hoping to bring Chesterfield striker Martin Gritton back to the club after securing Scott Bevan on a new contract.
Gritton spent two years at Plainmoor earlier in his career and reports suggest he is ready to rejoin Torquay on loan.
Gulls boss Paul Buckle believes the move will benefit Gritton's career and he is optimistic of finalising a deal with Chesterfield.
"Martin is an experienced player who I think will benefit from joining us at this moment in his career," Buckle told the Herald Express.
"He can also do a good job for us, because he is a different sort of player to the other strikers here.
"He's good technically, he's mobile, a good finisher and he's decent in the air."
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Bevan has signed a new one-year deal, however, a contract offer made to Wayne Carlisle has expired, meaning the winger is a free agent.
Bevan follows defender Chris Robertson and winger Saul Halpin in committing his immediate future to United in the past week.
