The game will be remembered for some fine finishing from both sides. Michael Boulding gave The Stags the perfect start when he raced clear before clipping the ball into the net after seven minutes.
Former Manchester City youngster Chris Greenacre doubled the lead five minutes later when he lashed home a wonder strike from 30-yards.
The Merry Millers have not ascended to the top of the division without showing resilience, and this was in evidence again when Chris Sedgwick scored after 35 minutes. The goal was an outstanding solo effort that had the Mansfield defence tied in knots - Sedgwick tormented the visitors` back line before curling the ball into the bottom corner.
Just as Rotherham appeared to be settling into a rhythm, Darrell Clarke (pictured) knocked them off their stride when he burst clear to restore the two goal advantage on 65 minutes.
The breathing space was short lived, however, as Sedgwick grabbed his second of the game, smashing the ball home from close range.
The visitors withstood some late pressure, particularly from the lively Sedgwick, to boost their own promotion challenge.
