The 22-year-old stopper agreed to stay at Gay Meadow for the rest of the campaign following talks with Shrews boss Kevin Ratcliffe.
Artell had completed three months on loan with the Shropshire-based outfit and will continue with the rest of the season in Division Three.
On Artell's loan extension, Ratcliffe told the Shropshire Star: "The kid wants to be a footballer and that's evident in the way he's played and the way he's put his heart and soul into it.
"Dave didn't really know if he was going to be staying with us until the end of the season so he was a bit mixed up about it.
"We had him in to question him about it and he's decided to stay which is great.
"It's a load off his mind because he didn't know if he wanted to go back to Rotherham to fight it out for a place with their squad being down to 20.
"He thought he might have had a chance, but at the end of the day he's getting regular football here."
