The midfielder has been dogged with a hernia problem all season, and doctors advised that a second bout of surgery was the best course of action.
The Republic of Ireland ace has failed to cement a regular place in the team this term, in no small part due to his injury, but will hope the surgery will allow him to return 100 percent fit in February.
Speaking to Brentford`s website, the 22-year-old said: "I went into hospital yesterday to have it re-done. I`m gutted as I`ve not showed the manager what I can do this season."
The Bees are currently four points adrift of leaders Brighton, and Rowlands will be looking to help the promotion push early next year.
