Newton made over 200 appearances for Chelsea during his playing career and scored in the 1997 FA Cup final win over Middlesbrough.
He later took on a coaching role with Chelsea before becoming Roberto Di Matteo's assistant at MK Dons and West Bromwich Albion.
The 41-year-old also assisted Di Matteo when the Italian became Chelsea manager, initially on a caretaker basis, in March 2012.
Newton has remained part of the Chelsea backroom team since Di Matteo's departure 12 months ago and he is currently the technical coach for the youth development programme at Stamford Bridge.
However, the highly-rated coach is keen to try his hand as a manager and has been linked with the Brentford job following Uwe Rosler's departure for Wigan Athletic.
