Trotta played a key role in helping Brentford secure promotion to the Championship, with his 13 goals ensuring the Bees will be up against his parent club next term, following Fulham's relegation from the Premier League.
Warburton is hoping to hold onto the Italian striker, but admits that Trotta's future is out of his hands.
"Marcello is a Fulham player," Warburton told GetWestLondon.
"They are in our division now, so I don't know what they have planned for him.
"If he doesn't figure in their plans then it would be great to talk to him. He enjoyed his time at Brentford."
The Italy Under-21 international, who has made just three substitute appearances for Fulham, featured in 40 games for the Bees during his season-long loan spell.
It was his second spell on loan with Brentford and he has previously taken in stints away from Craven Cottage with Wycombe and Watford.
