Plymouth made it eight wins from their last nine matches in Sky Bet League 2 with a 2-1 victory over struggling York at Bootham Crescent.
Jake Jervis chested in his 10th goal of the season past York goalkeeper Scott Flinders to put the Pilgrims ahead early on and Graham Carey then doubled the lead with a smart first-half finish.
Ben Godfrey managed a late consolation but the Minstermen remain firmly in trouble near the foot of the table following the defeat in new boss Jackie McNamara's first league game in charge - Plymouth are now five points clear at the top of table.
Elsewhere, Yeovil were denied the chance to move out of the relegation places after drawing 2-2 at home to Stevenage.
Harry Cornick and Shaun Jeffers scored either side of a Dean Wells equaliser to put the home team ahead in the second half but a last-gasp flicked header from Tom Pett ensured the sides would share the spoils.
Accrington and Newport also played out a 2-2 draw in Lancashire, with all four goals coming in the second half. The Exiles took the lead through a Yan Klukowski header before Billy Kee equalised from close range for the hosts.
Klukowski then set up Scott Boden for Newport's second before Matt Crooks secured a point for the hosts - tapping in after Seamus Conneely had earlier hit the post.
Oxford kept in touch with Plymouth at the top of the table with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Cambridge United. Ryan Taylor's first-half finish was enough to give the home side all three points.
Northampton also maintained their title challenge with a 1-0 win at home to Mansfield. The Cobblers' winning goal came in just the fourth minute of the match - Marc Richards heading in to move his side into the automatic promotion places.
Luton moved closer to the play-off positions with a comfortable 2-0 win over Barnet at Kenilworth Road. MK Dons loanee Danny Green spectacularly fired the Hatters into a first-half lead. Cameron McGeehan then scored a second to end Barnet's run of four games without a defeat.
An injury-time 20-yard chip from Luke Rooney rescued a 2-2 draw for Crawley away at Exeter. Alex Nicholls and Tom Nichols had earlier struck either side of a Sonny Bradley header.
Meanwhile, Matt Taylor scored twice as Bristol Rovers beat Carlisle 2-0 at home. The victory is only Rovers' second in the league at home this season and moves them up to eighth place.
