Colchester sign former Gillingham midfielder Doug Loft

Colchester have signed midfielder Doug Loft following his recent release by Sky Bet League 1 side Gillingham.

Loft, 29, who captained the Gills last season, has agreed a two-year contract with Colchester, who were recently relegated to League Two.

"Colchester United are delighted to welcome experienced midfielder Doug Loft as their latest summer signing," the U's said on their official club website.

Loft began his career at Brighton and in the summer of 2009 moved on to Port Vale, where he went on to win the club's player and players' player of the year awards at the end of the 2011-12 season.

He skippered Vale to promotion to League One in 2013 and after 196 appearances for the club moved on to Gillingham in 2014. He made 72 appearances in two seasons at the Priestfield Stadium.
