Notts County have signed former Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi until the end of the season.

The 35-year-old has been capped 10 times by Nigeria and played alongside County manager Kevin Nolan and former caretaker boss Alan Smith during his 14-year spell at St James' Park.

Nolan put his former team-mate straight into the matchday squad with a place on the bench for the clash at Accrington on Saturday.

Ameobi has played for clubs including Crystal Palace, Bolton and Fleetwood since leaving Newcastle - who like County are nicknamed the Magpies - in 2014.

Ameobi told the club's official website: "It's a huge honour for me to join a club like this, one of the founder members of the Football League.

"I know the manager and Alan Smith very well from our days at Newcastle so it has been great to join up with them again.
